MATC FACULTY MEMBER AND WISCONSIN VETERINARY TECHNICIAN ASSOCIATION HONORED BY WISCONSIN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) honored the veterinary technician profession and two Madison Area Technical College employees with awards at the organization's annual statewide meeting held the October 12 and 13 in Madison. (See press release)

MATC Holds Grand Opening, Student Demonstration of
Captioning Studio Funded by $500,000 Federal Grant;
Recognizes Baldwin for Funding Support

Press Release:
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) has completed the installation of its new broadcast captioning studio, funded with part of a $500,000 Congressionally directed grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education*. The funding is allowing MATC to develop a new degree program in broadcast captioning and expand its educational and job placement services for captioners and court reporters. Only 13 other colleges across the nation, including Lakeshore Technical College based in Cleveland, WI, were awarded similar grants. (See press release)

MATC PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Performing Arts brings Martin McDonagh's strange comic tale "The Cripple of Inishmaan" to our intimate black box Studio Theatre 206, located on the second floor of the Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson St. Performances are scheduled November 1-2, 7-10, and 14-16. Phi Theta Kappa Fall Induction Ceremony Held At Madison Area Technical College
Forty-two students from all five campuses were inducted into Madison Area Technical College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during the college's 2002-2003 fall induction ceremony on October 7, 2002. (See press release)

UWM TO OFFER ITS COLLEGE CONNECTION PROGRAM AT MATC
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) will extend its popular bachelor's degree completion program, UWM College Connection, to students at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) beginning next fall. MATC District Board Sets 2002-03 Property Tax Levy,
Student Senate Presents Priorities

At its October 9 meeting, the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board voted to levy a combined operations and debt service property tax levy of $63,422,426. The board established a mill rate of 1.39775, a decrease of .85% from last year's mill rate of 1.40973. For each $100,000 of value, property owners will pay approximately $139.78, or $1.19 less than last year, to support MATC. (See press release)

MATC COLUMBUS DAY FEAST HONORS ITALIAN HERITAGE ON OCT. 12
To celebrate Columbus Day locally, Madison Area Technical College's culinary students and instructors are teaming up with Italian culinary exchange students to prepare authentic Italian cuisine for a Columbus Day Feast Fundraiser. Together the U.S. and Italian students will prepare such traditional Italian dishes as Spigola al Sale, Pappardelle alla Lepre and Il Dolce. The menu selections were chosen by MATC Culinary Instructor, Chef Joseph Gaglio and represent cuisine from the Toscana, Umbria and Abruzzi regions of Italy. (See press release)

JIM HIGHTOWER TO KICK OFF MATC'S GLOBAL HORIZONS SERIES ON SUSTANABLE LIVING AND RENEWABLE ENERGY
National radio commentator, author, public speaker and well-known populist, Jim Hightower, will be the keynote speaker for Madison Area Technical College's week-long Global Horizons Distinguished Lecture Series event on sustainable living and renewable energy October 21 through 25. Hightower, former Texas Agriculture Commissioner and founder of the Agribusiness Accountability Project, will speak at MATC's downtown location, 211 North Carroll Street, Madison, from 7 to 9pm on Monday, October 21, in room D240. Guests and speakers include Lieutenant Governor Margaret A. Farrow; Anthony J. Deluca, president of INTECS; Lynette T. Ward, manager, Manufacturing Technical Assistance Pilot Program (MTAPP) for the Air Force Outreach Program Office; Gail Wegner, deputy director of the Center for Veterans Enterprise, created in the Department of Veterans Affairs, and representatives from federal agencies and prime government contractors. MATC TO HOST 2002 WISCONSIN EDUCATION FAIR
Students and adults looking for career options can take advantage of a gathering of over 100 organizations at the 2002 Wisconsin Education Fair (WEF). Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will host the fair Tuesday, October 15 from 6:30-8:30 pm and Wednesday, October 16 from 9 am - 11 am. This free event will take place at MATC's Truax Campus, Gymnasium, 3550 Anderson Street, Madison, and is open to all ages. (See press release)
