MATC District
Board Sets 2001-02 Property Tax Levy,
Student Senate Presents Priorities and Technology Report Approved
At its October 24 meeting,
the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board voted to levy
a combined operations and debt service property tax levy of $59,242,763.
The board established a mill rate of 1.40973, a decrease of 3.89% from
last year's mill rate of 1.46680. For each $100,000 of value, property
owners will pay approximately $140.97, or $5.71 less than last year, to
support MATC.
The MATC budget for the 2001-02 academic year, which was approved by the
board in June, is $128.2 million. The board finalizes the mill rate each
October based on actual equalized property valuation assessments, which
this year increased 10.03%. Property taxes fund less than one-half of
the college budget. Other funding sources include state aids, student
tuition and fees, and federal funds. The college serves 1 in 13 district
residents each year, and offers more than 100 educational programs.
The 2001-2002 budget will allow the college to maintain programs and services
to meet district needs and to fund new technology initiatives, improve
its technology infrastructure, remodel the Truax library and repair and
maintain aging facilities at its Downtown Education Center and Reedsburg
campus.
In other business, the MATC Student Senate presented highlights of its
prior year accomplishments and identified new priorities for this year.
Among its new priorities are plans to organize forums for students to
voice concerns to the Senate, an initiative to work with the administration
on improving financial aid services and procedures , and the development
of a community service event.
In addition, the board approved a monitoring report related to MATC's
strategic initiative to support learning by providing innovative educational
services through information technology. The report included details on
the progress of integrating technology into classroom instruction, offering
more courses via online, video and interactive television, and providing
technology support to student and employees.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's
16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal
arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and
activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training
in more than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational
diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college
serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin
and offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations
throughout the district.
