MATC District
Board Approves New Advanced Technical Certificate in Web Programming
At its October 25 meeting, the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District
Board approved the offering of a new academic certificate program in Web
programming and reviewed plans by the college to significantly expand
its offerings of shorter-term technical certificates. These types of technical
certificates are being designed to meet the increasing demands of employers
for highly targeted, short-term instruction. Short-term certificates can
develop employees quickly who are 'work-ready' in specific skill and employment
niches.
The new Web Programming
Advanced Technical Certificate is designed to develop Internet Web programming
skills for professionals already trained or working in the computer information
field. The certificate is comprised of four courses focusing on Web development
and the Java programming language. Pending approval by the Wisconsin Technical
College System Board, the certificate will be offered next semester to
accommodate forty students. Admission requirements for the new certificate
include a minimum of an associate degree in computer information systems
or two-years of related work experience.
The board also heard
about certificates recently introduced by the college in Webpage Design
and PC Help Desk /Troubleshooting, as well as the development of a new
Cisco Certified Network Professional Advanced Technical Certificate planned
for the fall semester 2001. In addition, a model for a new 2-year associate
degree was presented. The new degree model allows for the packaging of
several technical certificates, which may include new certificates in
subjects such as e-commerce, Internet development, and digital communications,
along with general education courses.
In other business,
the board received an update on the college's continuing efforts to investigate
and improve the indoor air quality at the Truax campus and received a
monitoring report on the college's strategic initiative related to information
technology.
MATC is one of the
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges. It provides
a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult
basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as
customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100
career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and
certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or
parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
