MATC PERFORMING
ARTS PRESENTS THE GUT GIRLS
Comic Drama Set in the Victorian Slaughterhouse
It's not a typical setting for a comic drama about the lives of a group
of women. But The Gut Girls is a theatrical piece that the London
Financial Times called, "humane and hugely funny." Madison Area Technical
College (MATC) Performing Arts will present Sarah Daniel's The Gut
Girls October 27-28 and November 3-4, at 8 pm in the Mitby Theater
on the MATC Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street.
Based upon true events,
the unlikely setting for this comic drama is in the gutting sheds of the
slaughterhouse at the Cattle Market in late Victorian Deptford, England.
This incisive drama shows working women at the bottom of the heap. When
crusading do-gooders succeed in doing something about their dreadful working
conditions by making their work illegal, the gut girls suddenly find themselves
with new options for changing their lives, one of which is a market girls
club founded by the Duchess of Albany.
Time Out in
London referred to The Gut Girls as a "vigorous and intelligent
new play," while the Independent calls the comic drama "A moving
and vigorous celebration of women's fighting spirit."
A cast of 19 MATC
students, staff, faculty, and members of the community are featured in
this chilling and hilarious look at gender roles, working conditions,
and class discrimination from the late 19th Century. Because of intense
scenes in the gutting sheds and sexual innuendo this production is not
recommended for young audiences.
Tickets are available
at the Mitby Theater Box Office on the MATC Truax campus. The box office
is open from 10:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Tickets also may
be purchased by phone by calling (608) 243-4000. Tickets to The Gut
Girls are $9 for the general public; $8 for seniors and MATC employees;
and $6 for MATC students.
