MATC CAREER SNAPSHOTS SEMINAR
PROFILES TECHNICAL AND INDUSTRIAL CAREERS
A four-year education is not
always required to earn a good salary. Many graduates of the technical
and industrial programs from Madison Area Technical College (MATC) are
able to find work with a starting salary between $22,000-$30,000 and an
earning potential of $50,000 and up with fewer than two years of college.
MATC will focus on automotive, biotechnology, electronics, machine tool,
printing, industrial maintenance, wood technics and welding careers in
an upcoming Career Snapshots to be held on Thursday, November 14. The
free career exploration event will be held at the MATC Truax Campus located
at 3550 Anderson Street in Madison from 4:30-7:30 pm. Registration for
Career Snapshots is available online at www.matcmadison.edu or by calling
608/246-6239.
The event will offer attendees many hands-on activities, including a chance
to diagnose automotive drivability using computer scanners; isolate DNA
and learn about genetic engineering; construct audio to personal computer
interfaces and analyze voices and music; design parts using Mastercam
Solid Modeling; view production to completion of a four-color print job;
program and test programmable logic controllers (PLC) and observe woodworking
demonstrations. MATC instructors and alumni working in these fields will
be available to answer questions.
"Working in these fields is mentally and physically stimulating.
In addition, graduates are highly sought after by employers." states
David Shonkwiler, dean of the Agriculture, Apprenticeship, Technical and
Industrial Division at MATC. "These are careers in which you can
be a problem solver and be rewarded for your skills."
Career Snapshots is a series
of seminars presented by MATC that allows attendees to participate in
an interactive program focusing on particular career fields. Whether changing
careers or simply exploring different career options, community members
of all ages are encouraged to attend.
MATC is the second largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems'
16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal
arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and
activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC awards associate
degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses.
The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central
Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and various other
locations throughout the district.
