New 2002 GED
Testing May Affect Current Students
Madison Area Technical
College is hoping to spread the news that new versions of the General
Educational Development (GED) tests will be released on January 1, 2002.
Because current and new test versions cannot be combined, students
who have successfully passed some but not all of the five subject tests
required to earn a GED certificate must complete the series by December
27, 2001, or start completely over in January says Sue Carter, MATCs
admissions/assessment administrator.
Madison Area Technical College supports five GED testing sites, one on
the Madison campus and one at each of its regional campuses, as well as
several off-campus test preparation sites throughout the district. The
college has been contacting GED students over the past two years who have
passed some of the tests to inform them of the upcoming test changes and
the need to complete the series before the end of 2001.
GED students wishing to check on their test status should call their testing
center. Testing Center phone numbers are: Madison, (608) 246-5220; Ft.
Atkinson, (920) 568-7223; Portage (608) 745-3110; Reedsburg (608) 524-7800;
Watertown, (920) 206-8008.
We are urging prospective GED students who feel they need preparation
time to consider beginning their test series in January, explains
Carter. In the meantime, fully staffed MATC test preparation and basic
skills centers are open to all students. Centers are located at the MATC
Downtown Education Center and all MATC regional campuses, East Madison
Community Center, Westside Elementary in Sun Prairie, Stoughton Public
Library, Sauk Prairie Community Center, Packers Community Center, Allied-Dunns
Marsh Community Center, Wexford Neighborhood Center and Bridge Lake Point
Waunona Neighborhood Center. Exact location and more information on the
GED and basic skills preparation centers is available by calling the MATC
Alternative Learning Division at (608) 258-2440.
One of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges,
MATC provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. With training in more than 100
career programs, the college awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas
and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. MATC serves all or parts
of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and other locations throughout the district
