HORISONS SERIES PRESENTS
EL SALVADOR: PEACE BUILDING IN THE FACE OF VIOLENCE
Former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Robert White
to give Keynote Lecture Community exchange and events planned April 6-12
Madison Area Technical Colleges (MATC) Global Horizons Series continues
with El Salvador: Peace Building in the Face of Violence, a look
at efforts to build peace and address social and environmental problems
in the aftermath of civil war. The series, to be held April 6-12, will
include a former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Robert E. White, the keynote
speaker and two guest speakers from El Salvador along with a community
reception, lectures, panel discussions and presentations. MATCs
El Salvador program is co-sponsored by the Madison Arcatao Sister City
Project (MASCP), U.S.-El Salvador Sister City Network, Edgewood College
and the Community Action on Latin America (CALA). A list of public events
with times and locations is enclosed.
Former U.S. Ambassador White will deliver the keynote lecture on Monday,
April 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MATC Downtown Education Center, 211 N.
Carroll St. Whites lecture is free and open to the public. Currently
president of the Center for International Policy, White served as ambassador
to El Salvador from 1979 to 1981. His experiences led him to leave his
position over disagreements with U.S. policy in the area. An expert in
Latin American affairs, he has held posts as Latin American Director of
the Peace Corps, Deputy Chief of Mission to Colombia and Nicaragua, Deputy
Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States and U.S.
Ambassador to Paraguay.
Two representatives from El Salvador, Luz Muñoz, health care representative
for the town council of Arcatao, Madisons Sister City, and Armando
Marín, a popular education coordinator for the Regional Association
for the Development of Chalatenango, will deliver a number of public presentations
throughout the week.
Muñoz and Marín will discuss peace issues in El Salvador
at a community event hosted by the Community Action on Latin America (CALA)
on Wednesday, April 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at the Pres House, 731 State
St., on the UW Library Mall. They will join Alicia Leinberger of Equal
Exchange for Free Trade vs. Fair Trade in El Salvador: Coffee, Maquila
Production and Human Rights, on Thursday, April 11, from 9:30 to
10:45 a.m., MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson St. Also on Thursday, they will
participate in a panel discussion, Refugee Communities and Community
Organizing: El Salvador and Palestine, with Dr. Laila Farah, an
expert on issues and conditions of Palestinian refugees. The panel will
be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the MATC Downtown Education Center.
A special convivencia for the Madison Salvadoran community is planned
for Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 5 p.m., at St. Marks Lutheran Church,
605 Spruce St. Muñoz and Marín will present El Salvador
en Madison and booths will feature information about area groups
working in El Salvador. Presentations will be in Spanish.
The El Salvador program examines the current state of El Salvador on its
journey from war to representative democracy. In the face of adversity,
the people of El Salvador have demonstrated remarkable resolve with a
high level of community organization and activism. They have lessons to
share with the U.S. and the world, says Geoff Bradshaw, multicultural
and international programs coordinator for MATC.
The Global Horizons series is dedicated to putting students, staff and
community members in contact with global figures who are making a difference
in the world through commitment, involvement and local action. The goal
of the series is to provide new levels of global awareness and new perspectives
on issues of diversity and multiculturalism.
One of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16
colleges, MATC provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal
arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and
activities, as well as customized employee training. With training in
more than 100 career programs, the college awards associate degrees, vocational
diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. MATC serves
all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers
instruction through five campuses and other locations throughout the district.
