Madison Area Technical College’s (MATC) Global Horizons Series continues with El Salvador: Peace Building in the Face of Violence, a look at efforts to build peace and address social and environmental problems in the aftermath of civil war. The series, to be held April 6-12, will include a former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Robert E. White, the keynote speaker and two guest speakers from El Salvador along with a community reception, lectures, panel discussions and presentations. MATC’s El Salvador program is co-sponsored by the Madison Arcatao Sister City Project (MASCP), U.S.-El Salvador Sister City Network, Edgewood College and the Community Action on Latin America (CALA). A list of public events with times and locations is enclosed.

Former U.S. Ambassador White will deliver the keynote lecture on Monday, April 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MATC Downtown Education Center, 211 N. Carroll St. White’s lecture is free and open to the public. Currently president of the Center for International Policy, White served as ambassador to El Salvador from 1979 to 1981. His experiences led him to leave his position over disagreements with U.S. policy in the area. An expert in Latin American affairs, he has held posts as Latin American Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Chief of Mission to Colombia and Nicaragua, Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States and U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay.

Two representatives from El Salvador, Luz Muñoz, health care representative for the town council of Arcatao, Madison’s Sister City, and Armando Marín, a popular education coordinator for the Regional Association for the Development of Chalatenango, will deliver a number of public presentations throughout the week.

Muñoz and Marín will discuss peace issues in El Salvador at a community event hosted by the Community Action on Latin America (CALA) on Wednesday, April 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at the Pres House, 731 State St., on the UW Library Mall. They will join Alicia Leinberger of Equal Exchange for “Free Trade vs. Fair Trade in El Salvador: Coffee, Maquila Production and Human Rights,” on Thursday, April 11, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson St. Also on Thursday, they will participate in a panel discussion, “Refugee Communities and Community Organizing: El Salvador and Palestine,” with Dr. Laila Farah, an expert on issues and conditions of Palestinian refugees. The panel will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the MATC Downtown Education Center.

A special convivencia for the Madison Salvadoran community is planned for Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 5 p.m., at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 605 Spruce St. Muñoz and Marín will present “El Salvador en Madison” and booths will feature information about area groups working in El Salvador. Presentations will be in Spanish.

The El Salvador program examines the current state of El Salvador on its journey from war to representative democracy. “In the face of adversity, the people of El Salvador have demonstrated remarkable resolve with a high level of community organization and activism. They have lessons to share with the U.S. and the world,” says Geoff Bradshaw, multicultural and international programs coordinator for MATC.

The Global Horizons series is dedicated to putting students, staff and community members in contact with global figures who are making a difference in the world through commitment, involvement and local action. The goal of the series is to provide new levels of global awareness and new perspectives on issues of diversity and multiculturalism.
