HOLDS AUDITIONS
FOR
THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN
Madison Area Technical College
Performing Arts is holding auditions for its first production for the
2002-2003 season, The Cripple of Inishmaan by celebrated young
playwright Martin McDonagh. Open auditions will be held on Tuesday, September
3, and Thursday, September 5, 2002, from 7 p.m. in the Studio Theater,
room 206, MATC Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street. Roles are available
for four women and five men.
The Cripple of Inishmaan tells the story of Billy, a disabled boy
living in the sleepy village of Inishmaan on the barren island of Inishmore
off the west coast of Ireland in 1934. Billy's parents died at sea when
he was a baby, and he has been raised by two foster-aunts. When it is
learned that a Hollywood director is coming to a neighboring island to
film his documentary, Man of Aran, no one is more excited than
Cripple Billy. He is determined to cross the sea and audition for the
Yank. As news of his audacity ripples through the rumor-starved community,
The Cripple of Inishmaan becomes a merciless portrayal of a world
so comically cramped and meanspirited that hope is an affront to its order.
The MATC production will be produced and directed by Wm. Patrick Barlow.
To prepare for the audition: Read the play. A copy is available
at the MATC Truax library and at the Mitby Theater Box Office. Prepare
a brief (one minute) monologue or reading from any source. Auditions are
open to all MATC students, staff and community members.
Performances of the play will be held November 1-2, 7-9 and 14-16, 2002,
in the Studio Theater at MATC Truax Campus. More detailed information
on the production or the audition process is available by contacting Wm.
Patrick Barlow at (608) 246-6572.
