Writing in
Place Workshop Takes Students to Italy
Informational Meeting Scheduled for January 24
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) is presenting an informational/pre-registration
meeting for Writing in Place: Italy, a three-credit course planned for
July, 2002. The informational meeting will be held at MATCs Downtown
Education Center, 211 North Carroll Street on Thursday, January 24, from
5:307 pm in Room D125. Course registration is open to the public
and MATC students but is limited to 18 participants. While visiting some
of Italys historic and beautiful landmarks, students in this course
learn practical skills for journaling and enhance creative writing skills
while they earn three college transfer credits.
Focus moves from ancient Rome and Pompeii to the medieval and Renaissance
city states of Siena and Florence and ends in Milan, the fashion and industrial
capitol of modern Italy. As students experience the history, art, culture
and daily life of Italy, they focus on experiential, reflective and imaginative
travel and/or memoir writing.
Students explore ancient and modern sites from the Pantheon to the Piazza
del Popolo and the Trevi Fountain. The trip includes visits to Pompeii,
Florence, Siena and San Gimignano with an optional tour of the Tuscan
wine country. Participants stay in first-class hotels with breakfast and
lunch or dinner provided daily.
The class is offered as part of MATC's commitment to enhancing global
awareness among its students. Additional information about course requirements,
costs and schedule will be presented at the January 24 meeting. Information
also is available by contacting Sonja Hansard-Weiner at 608/258-2389 or
