MATC
Barber/Cosmetology Program
Opens Salon at MATC Truax Campus
Free Haircuts Offered During Opening Week: January 22-25
In 1963,
the Barber Program at Madison Area Technical College began offering services
at the Downtown Education Center. In 1998, the Barber and Beauty programs
merged to form the Barber/Cosmetology Program. The students in this program
have been interested in offering similar services at the MATC-Truax Campus
due to the main campus' large student population. After much planning,
a salon will open on January 22 in the Mitby Theater dressing rooms at
the MATC-Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street. In celebration of this opening,
the students will offer free haircuts to students, staff and the general
public during the week of January 22.
The idea of a salon
at the Truax Campus was brought to the MATC Student Senate in the spring
of 1998. Throughout the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 academic years, representatives
from the Student Senate worked on the project. Their research efforts
included surveying of students and employees at Truax and touring potential
Truax facilities. "The MATC Student Senate is to be commended for
their efforts," states MATC President Beverly Simone. "After
the matter was brought to them, they worked with student constituents,
personnel from Facilities, the Barber/Cosmetology Program, their Division's
office and personnel from the Mitby Theater to make this happen."
A number of individuals
and departments helped make this salon a reality. They include students
Charles Manning, Carrie Waters and Marjorie Cook, and Student Senate Advisor
Jackie Dahlke.
The MATC Barber/Cosmetology
Salon will be open to the public Monday through Thursdays from 1- 4 pm.
The Salon, located near the Redsten Gym, will offer haircuts for $3.00
to the students and public at this time. When the lab is established,
retail hair supply products will be sold at a low cost to the public and
students. The MATC-Truax Barber/Cosmetology Salon will be located in the
Mitby Theater dressing rooms.
