ORIGINAL PLAYS TO BE PRESENTED AS INAUGURAL SEASON OF THEATREWORKS
New Programming Effort from MATC Performing Arts Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Performing Arts is pleased to announce a major programming effort. TheatreWorks, a new program of the MATC Theater Department and MATC Performing Arts, is designed to foster and stage original plays. By doing this, the college hopes to continue its tradition of providing students and the public with innovative and challenging theater. The inaugural season of TheatreWorks will feature three original plays written by MATC faculty members; the first reading will take place on February 15th.

TheatreWorks is funded and supported by the MATC Arts & Sciences Division and the MATC Foundation. Three MATC faculty, Michael Irwin, Holly Walter Kerby and Wm. Patrick Barlow, have researched and written original plays, which will be presented this season. The first event of the season, a staged reading/performance of the play Pierre Pauquette: Myth into Man, will be presented on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m in the MATC Studio Theater, located on the MATC-Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street.

Written and performed by English Instructor Michael Irwin, Pierre Pauquette: Myth into Man, examines the murder of the Ho-Chunk hero and traitor, Pierre Pauquette. Using historical records of both the white settlers and the native people of the Portage area, Irwin weaves characters as diverse as Governor Dodge, Pauquette and the Ho-Chunk tribal leader Whirling Thunder, into a fascinating mosaic of intrigue, misplaced trust and passion.

Staged readings of Father of Fortune by Theater Instructor Wm. Patrick Barlow and That Radiant Source by Science Instructor Holly Walter Kerby will follow in April and May of 2001. In late spring, TheatreWorks will call for new scripts for the 2001-2002 season. Scripts will be accepted from any resident of the MATC District. Details will be available in April.

The staged reading of Pierre Pauquette: Myth into Man will be presented one time only in the MATC Studio Theatre on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3.00 per person and are very limited. Tickets are available through the Mitby Theater Box Office or by calling (608) 243-4000.
