MATC "OPEN
HOUSE" OFFERS CAREER, EDUCATION INFORMATION AT TRUAX CAMPUS; In-Demand
Career Technologies, Classic Corvettes and Gas-Electric Auto Hybrids Are
Featured
Madison Area Technical
College (MATC) will hold its annual Open House on Sunday, March 11, 1
Ð 4 p.m. at its Truax campus in Madison. A wide variety of seminars and
displays will offer information on more than 90 career programs, college
preparation, financial aid and starting studies toward a four-year degree.
In addition, visitors
can experience career technologies in engineering, transportation and
engines, manufacturing and science by visiting class labs and talking
with instructors, alumni and professionals working in these fields today.
"Local employers
have a tremendous need for professionals trained in traditional technologies,
such as automotive and diesel repair, welding, printing, machining and
industrial maintenance," states David Shonkwiler, MATC's dean of
technical and industrial programs.
"These are
great jobs that require skills that use both your head and hands. Annual
salaries start at $22,000 to $30,000 and can climb to $50,000 and more
with experience. Many jobs await each of our graduates in these fields
and weÕre looking for more students to help us meet this need, "he
explains. "Anyone who visits Open House can learn more about these
and other well paid, in-demand jobs, and the training we offer for these
terrific careers."
In MATCÕs first-floor
transportation labs, visitors can:
- View Corvettes and a customized
Porsche Boxster race car;
- Get a 'bottoms-up' view
of a PT Cruiser;
- See new gas-electric auto
hybrids;
- Inspect John Deere and Case
diesel equipment;
- Test alignment on a Peterbilt
truck.

MATC is one of the
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges. It provides
a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult
basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as
customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100
career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and
certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or
parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
