APPRAISER QUALIFICATION BOARD
CERTIFIES MATC FACULTY MEMBER
TO TEACH MANDATORY APPRAISAL STANDARDS COURSES
Lawrence Sager, a
real estate instructor at Madison Area Technical College (MATC), is one
of only four instructors in Wisconsin to qualify to teach the Uniform
Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course, a mandatory
federal effort to set uniform national standards and ethics for the appraisal
profession. As of January 1, 2003, all persons in Wisconsin applying for
credentials as a real estate appraiser will be required to complete the
15-hour USPAP course and pass an exam. Current appraisers looking to upgrade
certification also will be required to complete a 7-hour version of the
course and exam.
Sager completed rigorous training and passed a tough qualifying exam given
by the Appraiser Qualification Board of the Wisconsin Department of Regulation
and Licensing to become certified to teach USPAP. Currently, there are
32,000 appraisers in Wisconsin.
MATC offers a two-year associate in applied science degree in real estate
to students interested in residential, commercial or industrial real estate.
Career opportunities include work as a broker, appraiser, property manager
or mortgage lender. The program explores the basics of the real estate
market, property rights, ownership, construction, financing and brokerage.
The USPAP course will be offered to non-degree seeking students as well
as incorporated into the requirements for the two-year degree program.
In addition to serving as an instructor in MATC's Real Estate Program,
Sager is a licensed real estate broker, certified residential appraiser
and realtor, and holds a master's degree in urban land economics. He is
the author of 12 books and his writings have appeared in numerous publications
in the real estate and related fields.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's
16 colleges and serves approximately 50,000 individuals annually. It provides
a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult
basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as
customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100
career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and
certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or
parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various locations throughout the district.
