Graduate 962 Students At Mid-Year Commencement
Madison Area Technical College
(MATC) will graduate 962 students at its mid-year commencement ceremony
to be held Friday, December 21. The ceremony, to be held at 2:00 pm at
the Exhibition Hall of the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, will include
students from its Madison campuses, as well as its Fort Atkinson, Portage,
Reedsburg and Watertown campuses.
The graduate address will be given by Madison resident Sherri Ford, who
is earning an associate degree from the college's Police Science Program.
Sherri, a dean's list student, has been an active member of the Police
Science Association and recently served as its vice president. Upon graduation,
she will begin her career as a police officer with the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Police Department. Ford is a 1998 graduate of Portage High School.
Other speakers at the ceremony will be MATC District Board Chair James
Cavanaugh and MATC President Dr. Beverly S. Simone.
Of the graduates, 239 will receive two-year associate degrees or diplomas,
133 will earn one-year diplomas and nearly 600 will earn shorter-term
diplomas. Among the colleges more than 100 academic and occupational programs,
those graduating the most students this semester include: Arts and Sciences,
Commercial Art, Accounting, Business Mid-Management, Marketing, and Nursing
(associate degree); Medical Coding, Nursing-Practical (1-year diploma);
and Nursing Assistant, Police Recruit and Emergency Medical Technician
(shorter-term diploma).
Ninety-seven graduates received academic honors. This honor is given to
graduates who have earned a GPA of 3.75 or higher in courses within their
programs of study. The Special Service Award was granted to 11 graduates.
This award is given to students for their service in student government,
clubs and activities, their demonstrated leadership and initiative in
the classroom, and their awards and accomplishments outside of the college.
MATC is the one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems'
16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal
arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies, as
well as customized training.
