MATC PERFORMING ARTS HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR "WORKING"
Based on the book written by Studs Terkel, Working is an energetic musical that explores the lives of people at work, whether they are waitresses, parking lot attendants or schoolteachers. Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Performing Arts will present Working by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell) and Nina Faso as the second production of the 2000-2001 season. The music for Working was created by Stephen Schwartz, Micki Grant, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and James Taylor. Auditions for the show will be held on Tuesday, January 9 and Wednesday, January 10, 2001, from 7:00 - 10:00 pm in the Mitby Theater on the MATC Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street.

Working explores the American workday from the Monday morning blues to the second shift blahs using the original words of some common men and women. Twenty-six workers, including a corporate executive, newsboy, gas man, housewife, fireman, waitress, millworker, sailor, etc. sing and talk about their jobs, defining not only their daily grind, but their hopes and aspirations as well.

Roles are available for 25-30 men and women, aged 10-70. Specific roles for actors of color are available. Those wishing to audition should prepare one song from a Broadway show and a monologue from any play that highlights range and talent. Total time for each audition (including song and monologue) is limited to four minutes or less. An accompanist will be provided. Auditioners should bring two copies of clearly marked music. Since the show is highly choreographed and staged, each actor auditioning will be required to dance in a small group choreography session and should dress accordingly.

The production will be produced and directed by Wm. Patrick Barlow, with vocal direction by Bill Bush, choreography by Robin Fonfara, orchestra by Jeff Peronto, stage management by Chris Lechner and lighting design by Corey Helser. There will be seven performances of Working on March 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, and 18 in the Mitby Theater at the MATC-Truax Campus.

Scripts and taped soundtrack selections are available from MATC Performing Arts, Room 107, on the MATC Truax Campus. Scripts and tapes also are on reserve for use in the MATC Information Resources Center (library), at the Truax Campus. For more detailed information on the production or the audition process please contact Wm. Patrick Barlow at 246-6572.
