MATC TAKES
CREATIVE WRITING AND LITERATURE INTO THE WILDERNESS
The wilderness of northern Wisconsin will become a classroom without walls
for two courses being offered by Madison Area Technical College (MATC).
The six-day courses will take place May 19-25 at Camp Manito-Wish in Boulder
Junction, Wisconsin. Students can earn three credits in either Creative
Writing in the Wild or Literature in the Wild while taking part in
outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing and rock climbing.
Creative Writing
in the Wild, taught by Larry Hansen, focuses on nature writing. Students
will work on essays, poetry, personal narratives, short plays and monologues.
Students of Literature in the Wild, led by Marilyn Carien, will
study writers such as Walt Whitman, Jon Krakauer, Jack London, Henry David
Thoreau and Wallace Stegner.
According to Instructor
Marilyn Carien, these courses are a throwback to the teaching techniques
of Artistotle. "Aristotle, commonly known as the founder of higher education,
would take his students into nature to contemplate life," states Carien.
"That's basically what we're doing here. We're going back to nature to
think, read, and write. The outdoors is our classroom."
Cost of the six-day
course is $535.30, which includes $275.30 for tuition and $260 to cover
the cost of six nights of lodging, all meals, and recreational equipment.
The college-level course is open to any member of the public. However,
participants should have completed the equivalent of MATC's English Composition
I before taking the course. Persons interested in participating in either
course, should put a deposit of $260 down by January 15. Deposits should
be turned in to MATC's Arts & Sciences Divisional Office on the 2nd floor
of the MATC Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street. More information is available
through MATC's Arts & Sciences Division at (608) 246-6246.
MATC is one of
the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges. It
provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science,
adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well
as customized employee training. The college serves all or parts of 12
counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction through
five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
