MATC OFFERS
PC HELP DESK/TROUBLESHOOTING CERTIFICATE
Help desk and computer troubleshooting support is projected to be one
of the fastest growing job categories to the year 2005. Computer technicians
are indispensable in today's offices. The number of calls to help desks
around the country has been increasing by about 20% a year according to
a study by the GartnerGroup, a consulting firm in Stamford, CT. Computer
industry experts indicate that there are too few help desk technicians
for the demands of the new millennium. Madison Area Technical College
(MATC) is aiming to fill this business demand by providing a new certificate
in PC Help Desk/Troubleshooting.
If workers feel
they need an on-ramp to the information highway, the PC Help Desk/ Troubleshooting
Certificate will teach them how to diagnose common hardware/software problems;
perform system upgrades; diagnose and fix common computer problems; learn
techniques and shortcuts for maximum PC performance; and handle customer
problems. Curriculum for the certificate was determined through input
from a survey of 1,040 Madison area businesses and the collegeÕs business
programs advisory committee.
According to
Instructor Gerri Wicklund, "The PC Help Desk / Troubleshooting Certificate
is perfect for working adults. Many students enrolled in this certificate
are working full-time and all of the courses in the certificate are offered
as evening classes." Classes meet for or two nights per week from 5:30
until 8:30 p.m. The certificate can be obtained in ten months (two semesters).
who and are preparing for a career change. Courses are hands-on and taught
by experienced instructors.
Troubleshooting
classes are taught by an A+ certified instructor, and both PC Troubleshooting
1 and 2 can be used to help prepare for the A+ computer troubleshooting
certification. A+ certification is a nationally recognized certification,
offered by Comptia, for people who fix computers. To qualify for certification,
rigorous testing is required. In the new millennium, business are valuing
certification as an important method by which students prove their skill
