MATC MATH DEPARTMENT
SPONSORS MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH COMPETITION
The Math Department
at Madison Area Technical College (MATC) is sponsoring its first middle
school math competition on Wednesday, April 25th. Held at the MATC-Truax
Campus, 3550 Anderson Street, the competition will feature approximately
100 students from 25 area middle schools. Students arrive at MATC at 9:30
am and will begin the first round of competition at 10:30 am. The announcement
of winning teams and award presentations will take place at 2:00 pm in
the MATC Mitby Theater.
The competition will
consist of three rounds of multiple choice type examinations, each lasting
approximately 30 minutes. All participants will take the first two parts;
the top twenty participants will advance to the third round. There will
be cash awards for the top four participants.
By sponsoring this
competition, the Math Department hopes to develop problem-solving skills,
increase interest and enjoyment of mathematics among youth and to promote
participation in mathematics. The problems will present a wide range of
difficulty. Some will need no more than common sense and clear reasoning,
while others may require considerable mathematical reasoning.
Participating middle
schools include Badger Ridge Area, Baraboo, Deerfield, Edgewood, Velma
Hamilton, Johnson Creek, Kromrey, Nikolay, Patrick Marsh, Portage, Prairie
View, River Valley, River Bluff, Riverside, Sun Prairie, Savanna Oak,
Sennet Ray, and Wisconsin Heights. Additional participating schools include
Forest Lane Junior High, Marshall Junior High, Neshkoro Elementary, and
Westfield Elementary.
In the fall of 2001,
the MATC Math Department will hold a math competition for area high school
students. This competition will provide $1000 scholarships to the four
highest-scoring students if they choose to attend MATC as a full-time
student. This competition is supported through the MATC Foundations
Innovative Grants Program. The Innovative Grants Program was developed
in 2000 to support new initiatives and programs that could not otherwise
be funded at MATC.
The MATC Foundation
was established in 1973 as a 503 (c) 3 organization to solicit, receive,
manage and disburse funds, equipment and other resources for the benefit
of MATC and its students. Since moving to its Truax offices in 1986, the
Foundation has disbursed more than $3 million to over 14,000 MATC students.
Each year, over 1,500 students benefit from scholarships, loans and grants
through the MATC Foundation.
MATC is one of the
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more
than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas
and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all
or parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
