MATC BARBER/COSMETOLOGY
STUDENTS HELP KIDS DEAL WITH MEDICAL HAIR LOSS
Students in the Madison
Area Technical College (MATC) Barber/Cosmetology Program have been helping
kids who suffer from medical hair loss. When MATC students cut a patrons
long hair that is at least 10 inches in length, the hair is then shampooed
and donated to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for financially
disadvantaged children dealing with medical hair loss.
MATC students operate salons that provide retail hair styling services
at MATC-Truax and the colleges Downtown Education Center. The Downtown
salon is open Monday through Friday .12:30 3:45 pm. Summer hours
from June through August are 8:30 11:20 am and 12:30 3:45
pm. The Truax salon is open yet this semester 12:30 3:45 pm on
April 24- 26, 30 and May 1-2, and 7-10. The cost of a shampoo and a haircut
is $3.00. The salons are open to the public and walk-in customers are
welcome.
Locks of Love is a
non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged
children under the age of 18 who suffer from long-term medical hair loss.
The organization meets a unique need for children throughout the U.S.
by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.
These prostheses help to restore the self-esteem and confidence of children,
enabling them to face the world and their peers.
MATC is one of the
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more
than 100 career programs. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties
located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction through five
campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
