MATC TRAINING STUDENTS FOR "HOT JOBS"

What are the hottest jobs? That’s a question many folks are asking, especially now in an uncertain economy.

A new report by the Department of Workforce Development lists projections for the Top 50 Fastest Growing Occupations during the next six years in South Central Wisconsin. The jobs include information technology, medical and dental assistants, respiratory andoccupational therapists, preschool teachers and desktop publishers.

"Many of these top 50 fastest growing occupations are middle skill jobs, which require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year degree," says Marla Gamoran, Madison Area Technical College's Director of Business and Industry Services. "MATC plays a critical role in the training pipeline that supplies the workforce for these jobs."

And that training is paying off. A recent study which followed the careers of MATC students five years after they graduated shows 71 percent are working in their fields of training. These MATC graduates had a median salary growth of 40 percent during the past five years (7.9 percent annually), and average earnings of more than $41,000 a year.

MATC provides "real world smart" education as one of 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. It serves 12 south-central Wisconsin counties through a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs through five campuses and numerous community locations.
