MATC OFFERS NEW SENIOR ACTIVITY DIRECTOR CERTIFICATE;
FIRST PROGRAM OF ITS KIND IN THE NATION
    
The “baby boomer” population continues to boom. A recent report by “The Media Audit” says adults nearing retirement are now one of the fastest growing demographics in the country. To get the most out of their retirement years, many seniors are enrolling in exercise and recreation programs. That has sparked a new and unique certificate program at Madison Area Technical College. It’s called Senior Activity Director, believed to be the first program of its kind in the country. see press release

MATC HOSTS GIRL TECH 2008 ENCOURAGES TEEN GIRLS TO CONSIDER TECHNOLOGY CAREERS    
When women think about careers in information technology, one thing usually pops in their mind.“They think they’ll be trapped in a cubicle or a cold equipment room, but that’s not what information technology jobs are like anymore,” says Madison Area Technical College information technology instructor Nina Milbauer. To help change that gloomy perception, Madison Area Technical College is hosting Girl Tech 2008. The five-day event runs June 23-27 in room 142 at MATC’s Truax campus. see press release

MATC TO HOST UNIQUE THREE-DAY INSTITUTE:
UNDERSTANDING OF PEACE AND CONFLICT IN MUSLIM WORLD   
National experts will discuss Islam and the Middle East during a three-day Summer Institute for International Education conference at Madison Area Technical College. The institute will start at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, and run through early afternoon on Friday, June 20, at MATC’s Downtown campus, 211 N. Carroll St., Madison. see press release

MATC IS ONE OF 39 SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE SELECTED AS HP TECHNOLOGY GRANT RECIPIENT
Madison Area Technical College is one of 39 two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico to receive a 2008 HP Technology for Teaching grant, which is designed to transform teaching and improve learning in the classroom through innovative uses of technology. MATC will receive an award package of HP products and a faculty cash award valued at more than $77,000. see press release

MATC INSTRUCTOR'S DOCUMENTARY TRACES HISTORY OF WISCONSIN JEWISH ENTREPRENEURS
It’s a little-known fact rarely mentioned in history books. Many turn-of-the-century Jewish settlers in the Madison area worked in some kind of scrap metal business. At 8 p.m. Thursday, June 10, Madison Area Technical College history instructor and author Jonathan Pollack will show his 20-minute documentary on this unique topic at Indie Coffee, 1225 Regent St., Madison. see press release

MATC TO HONOR MORE THAN 100 AT HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CEREMONY
The road to a high school diploma can sometimes include a few twists, bumps, and turns. Some students leave school early to find a job. Others delay their education plans because of health, family or money issues. So when more than 100 students hear their names called Tuesday, June 10, at Madison Area Technical College's High School Completion Recognition Ceremony, it will be a dream come true. see press release

MATC TRAINING STUDENTS FOR "HOT JOBS"
What are the hottest jobs? That’s a question many folks are asking, especially now in an uncertain economy. A new report by the Department of Workforce Development lists projections for the Top 50 Fastest Growing Occupations during the next six years in South Central Wisconsin. The jobs include information technology, medical and dental assistants, respiratory andoccupational therapists, preschool teachers and desktop publishers. see press release
