"LIFE DURING WARTIME" AIMS TO INVIGORATE HISTORY INSTRUCTION IN WISCONSIN
MATC is one of a group of education partners involved in a $940,000 Teaching American History grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant funds a proposal titled “Life During Wartime” that will develop content and mentoring services for fifth- through twelfth-grade teachers. The goal of the project is to improve students’ knowledge of American history by improving teachers’ knowledge of the subject.
"The program will go beyond a political timeline, and go into the lives of soldiers deployed and their families at home during war," says MATC history instructor Jonathan Pollack, co-director of this unique project connecting historians and veterans with more than 150 history teachers.
The partnership includes teachers from the Cooperative Education Service Area No. 5 (CESA 5), serving central Wisconsin, and the Madison Metropolitan School District; historians from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and MATC; the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and veteran volunteers.
MATC provides "real world smart" education as one of 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. It serves 12 south-central Wisconsin counties through a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs through five campuses and numerous community locations.
