MATC TO DEDICATE SOLAR-POWERED TRANSIT SHELTER
State Rep. Spencer Black to Speak at Event
Whether it’s raining, snowing, or just plain nasty outside, students at Madison Area Technical College now have a unique shelter from the storm—and it’s powered by sunshine.
On Friday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m., MATC will dedicate its new solar-powered transit shelter. The shelter is located adjacent to the administration building parking lot at MATC’s Truax campus.
One of Wisconsin’s leading environmental advocates, State Representative Spencer Black, will be among those participating in the dedication, which kicks-off MATC’s Earth Week activities.
MATC’s Student Senate came up with the idea and the money for the transit shelter several years ago, after seeing students with disabilities waiting outside in the inclement weather for their bus or cab ride home.
The shelter, which is expected to save MATC about $450 a year in energy costs, will feature a heated tile floor and energy-saving LED lights.
MATC provides "real world smart" education as one of 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. It serves 12 south-central Wisconsin counties through a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs through five campuses and numerous community locations.
