$175 MILLION GIFT TO HELP MATC STUDENTS
Christmas has come early for students at Madison Area Technical College. As part of a $175 million gift by retired Cisco Systems Chairman John Morgridge and his wife Tashia, a scholarship fund is being set up that allows eligible MATC students to apply
for grants of up to $5,000 during the 2008-09 school year.
"This wonderful gift will ensure that we can continue to transform lives by providing a real-world education for all students in the high-skill,
well-paid careers that are needed most in Wisconsin," says MATC President Dr. Bettsey Barhorst. "We appreciate the Morgridge family’s long-time support for technical colleges and the value our institutions add to our state’s economy."
Starting next fall, the scholarship fund will award nearly 2,000 grants of $1,000 to $5,000, and more than 3,000 grants to eligible students every year after that. The grants, which do not need to be repaid, will be in addition to the state and federal grants many students are already receiving.
Eligibility for the scholarship fund will be determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process.
MATC provides "real world smart" education as one of 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. It serves 12 south-central Wisconsin counties through a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs through five campuses and numerous community locations.
