MATC STUDENTS BUILD UNIQUE "MINICABIN"
Wisconsin’s gun deer season is just around the corner, and that means hunters will soon be out in the woods or in their hunting cabins.
Those still looking for a cabin might want to check out the ones being built in Madison Area Technical College’s Construction and Remodeling program. Instructors were looking for a hands-on project for students that included some new earth-friendly building techniques. That sparked the idea to create a "minicabin," which could be easily transported over the road.
"It’s very energy efficient, and uses recycled flooring and decorative beams along with other recycled products," says instructor John Stephany.
Students recently finished their first minicabin, which is 17 feet wide by 27 feet long. But don’t let the small square footage fool you.
"The cabin has a kitchen area and a small bath, plus a loft. It also has plumbing and electrical wiring," says Stephany.
The students' first minicabin is expected to sell for nearly $50,000. Stephany says the minicabins can also be used as an extra room in someone’s backyard.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction at five campuses, Madison, Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg, Watertown and numerous community locations throughout the district.
