MIME AND MATH MERGE THROUGH "MIME-MATICS" AT MATC'S MATHFEST 2007
On Tuesday, October 23, the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Math Club will host MathFest 2007 featuring "Mime-Matics," an exploration of math concepts through the art of mime. Dr. Tim Chartier of Davidson College in North Carolina combines his love of mathematics with a passion for performance at this special public presentation starting at 9 a.m. in the college's Mitby Theater at MATC, 3350 Anderson St. in Madison.
Through Mime-Matics, audiences encounter math brought to them through the entertaining style of an artist who has performed at local, national and international settings. Whether creating an illusion of an invisible wall or pulling on an invisible rope, Dr. Chartier uses mime to delve into complex mathematical concepts such as estimation, tiling, and infinity, and make these fun and interesting to audiences of all ages.
The performance will be followed at 10:30 a.m. by "Face Off," an annual mathematics competition for area middle school students. Fourteen teams from Akira Toki, Black Hawk, Cherokee, Jefferson, Sauk Prairie, Spring Harbor and Velma Hamilton schools will compete for prizes in a game show setting. Following the competition, the program will wrap up with a musical performance by the Madison Area Afrocentric Percussionists in room 142 B/C at 12:15 p.m.
Dr. Chartier's research in numerical analysis and partial differential equations, sometimes in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been supported by the Department of Energy. He is a 2007 recipient of the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America and took master classes in mime with Marcel Marceau.
The MATC Math Club promotes interest in mathematics in the college and the community. The club regularly hosts monthly guest lectures and mathematics competitions for students at the middle school, high school and college level.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges.
