ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE "DAY OF THE DEAD" AT MATC
Sugar Skulls. Traditional bread. An altar contest. Those are just some of the things you’ll see in Madison Area Technical College’s cafeteria on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
It’s all part of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
To help celebrate the holiday, about 60 students from Leopold Elementary School’s bilingual classes will be decorating traditional sugar skulls and singing songs at MATC. This is the second year the group United Common Ground has sponsored the intergenerational event.
Day of the Dead can be traced back nearly 3,000 years. It began in Mexico as a way to honor the dead and celebrate the continuation of life. The ritual is now celebrated in parts of the United States and Central America.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in
south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction at five campuses, Madison, Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg and Watertown, and numerous community locations throughout the district.
