MATC DISTRICT BOARD APPROVES 2007-08 BUDGET

The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board voted at its June 13 meeting to adopt the 2007-08 fiscal year budget. The budget of $187,067,000 includes an estimated mill rate of 1.16751. For every $100,000 in assessed property value, district property owners will pay $116.75 in taxes to support MATC, $4.48 less than last year when property owners paid $121.23 for every $100,000 in assessed value. The estimated mill rate will be adjusted in October based on actual equalized property valuation assessments.

“This budget completes MATC’s multi-year student equity, success and preparedness initiative and builds on investments from last year in the areas of increasing access, and exploring alternative deliveries,” states Dr. Bettsey Barhorst, MATC president. According to Barhorst, the budget includes major new investments funded by increased student enrollments. The major initiatives include:

  • Continuing outreach efforts to the Spanish-speaking community by introducing sections in biotechnology in a bi-lingual format and expanding language interpretation training in health and safety related programs.
  • Continuing to expand services in testing, writing center and college success courses to help encourage student preparedness and ensure success.
  • Expanding summer school course offerings.
  • Adding sections in programs that currently have waiting lists, including Liberal Arts Transfer, Medical Assistant, Paralegal, Welding, and Automotive.
  • Adding the "Fastrack" accelerated delivery option for students in Culinary programs.
  • Addressing other college-wide needs by providing additional targeted funding for operating expenses and staffing issues.

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and
life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and numerous community locations throughout the district.
