10 a.m. Ceremony for Construction, Manufacturing, Apprenticeship & Transportation; Health & Safety; and Human & Protective Service Graduates:
John Roach, president and senior creative, JRP, Inc.
Speech excerpt: " . . . the students who graduate today, like those before them, are the human infrastructure of the city and state that I love, and call home. In an information age where people sit in cubicles and pass megabits of data from their computer to someone elses computer in another cubicle and call it work, I hold a special respect for anyone who has an actual skill. . . . the graduates we honor today . . . are the next generation of Wisconsin professionals who can actually do something."
Stephanie Steele, student speaker, Human Services Associate 2007 graduate
A graduate of Wisconsin Dells High School, Stephanie has participated in Alternative Breaks community service volunteer programs at MATC in New Orleans and West Virginia. She plans to start her career by working on domestic violence issues.
Speech excerpt: " I hope these last pieces of advice will help you like they have helped me: Dont ever feel that you can't accomplish something. Remember, amateurs built the arc, professionals built the Titanic. There is a time to let things happen and a time to make things happen. Don't let yourself watch from the sidelines. Accept others beliefs and attitudes with great stride and benevolence, as we must keep open minds. Your families are all very proud of you. This is an opportune time to ask for money!"
1 p.m. Ceremony for Agriscience & Technologies, Arts & Sciences, Business & Applied Arts Graduates
Londa Dewey, president U.S. Bank Private Client Group
Speech excerpt: "As a business leader in Dane County, I enthusiastically invite you to be part of our regional economy. The Mid-America Regions, from Iowa to Ohio, has the fourth largest GDP in the world, rich with agriculture, biotechnology, healthcare, brain-basedbusinesses and light manufacturing. . . Find a job that allows you to do what you love to do, in an organization that you believe in, with people that you enjoy and respect. Passion will follow. When you combine your passion, a positive attitude with skills and goals, no one can stop you."
Teri Ott, student speaker, Accounting 2007 graduate
A busy wife and mother, Teri has earned a spot on the Deans List every semester at MATC. A graduate of Sun Prairie High School, Teri first began a program at MATC to become a medical assistant and later returned to study accounting when her daughter turned two. She is applying for accounting positions and has set a goal to complete her bachelors degree within the next five years.
Speech excerpt: "Two years ago, when I decided to return to school, I was terrified. My last experience, high school, taught me that educational institutions were full of large cliques and small desks, and I was afraid at MATC I wouldnt fit in either! I was sure there was no place for a returning 28 year-old mother and wife. My fears, however, were soon allayed. I was immediately comfortable in the inclusive family atmosphere of MATC."
