MATC HOSTS FIRST ANNUAL ALL-CITY AMERICAN INDIAN
AND ALASKAN NATIVE GRADUATION CELEBRATION
American Indian graduates from area middle schools, high schools and colleges to celebrate academic achievement together at community-wide event
On May 5, Madison will make history with the first community-wide event to recognize and celebrate the academic achievements of American Indian graduates from area middle schools, high schools, Edgewood College, University of Wisconsin–Madison and MATC. The First Annual All-city American Indian and Alaskan Native Graduation Celebration will be held at Madison Area Technical College (MATC). Graduates will be honored with a program followed by a community lunch.
American Indians make up about 4 percent of city's population. According to the website for UW's American Indian Student Academic Services, one of the sponsors of the event, "It is a tradition among many Native Nations to recognize individuals whose accomplishments benefit the communities to whom he or she belongs…This graduation ceremony recognizes the completion of various education milestones as accomplishments of the highest order. We hope to recognize the achievements of Native students through a Native Student Graduation Ceremony every spring."
