MATC TO HOST THREE COMPETITIONS FOR ANNUAL SKILLS USA EVENT
FOR IN-DEMAND FIELDS: WELDING, MACHINING AND COLLISION REPAIR
The sparks will fly and machines will whirl and grind at the Wisconisn SkillsUSA Conference to be held in Madison April 25. About 800 middle school, high school and technical college students will compete in 51 events showcasing their skills in technical and health occupations. Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will host three of the events at its Truax location — Welding, Precision Machine Tool and Collision Repair. The rest of the competitions will be held at the Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall where information will be available on technical careers through exhibits, seminars and interaction with representatives from colleges and businesses.
Welding students will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of personal safety, equipment handling and blueprint reading as well as oxygen fuel cutting and oxyacetylene fusion welding at MATC's well-equipped welding laboratory. Specialized lab space also will be available for the precision machine tooling competition in which participants will produce parts to specifications as well as show an understanding of safety and machining proficiency.
