TAXPAYER ALLIANCE STUDY RECOGNIZES MATC’S ECONOMIC IMPACT
Madison Area Technical College President Dr. Bettsey Barhorst says a new study by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance demonstrates the potential of MATC to spur stronger economic growth in the 12 counties in the district the college serves. see press release

MATC TO HOST THREE COMPETITIONS FOR ANNUAL SKILLS USA EVENT
FOR IN-DEMAND FIELDS: WELDING, MACHINING AND COLLISION REPAIR

The sparks will fly and machines will whirl and grind at the Wisconisn SkillsUSA Conference to be held in Madison April 25. About 800 middle school, high school and technical college students will compete in 51 events showcasing their skills in technical and health occupations. Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will host three of the events at its Truax location — Welding, Precision Machine Tool and Collision Repair. The rest of the competitions will be held at the Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall where information will be available on technical careers through exhibits, seminars and interaction with representatives from colleges and businesses. see media advisory

MATC IT TEAM PLACES IN TOP TEN AT NATIONAL COLLEGIATE COMPETITION
Two teams of information technology (IT) students from Madison Area Technical College (MATC) placed in the top ten in a national PC Troubleshooting competition hosted by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) at its National Collegiate Conference in Detroit last month. The students, members of the Madison Information Technology Association (MITA) student club, competed against 121 teams of students from 70 schools representing both two- and four-year colleges. see press release

A new report by Madison Area Technical College indicates more than 96% of workers who graduated from an MATC program in the past academic year are employed in-state, generating more economic activity for their communities. see press release

"A RETURN TO BROADWAY"

Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Community Show Choir will showcase song selections from some of Broadway's biggest hits on Sunday, May 6. The Show Choir’s Spring Super Show 2007 will feature a wide variety of songs including "Consider Yourself" from Oliver!, "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera, "Seventy-six Trombones" from The Music Man and the title song from Oklahoma. see press release

WORK OF 100 GRADUATING ART AND DESIGN STUDENTS PRESENTED AT MATC PORTFOLIO SHOW
Area businesses and public invited to view portfolio presentations
Area businesses may find just the designer or visual artist they need at Madison Area Technical College's Portfolio Show to be held Monday, April 30. The best work of graduating animation, graphic design, photography, visual communication and interior design students will be on display from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Monona Terrace and will include a variety of media. In addition to photographs, layouts, publications, presentation boards and CAD drawings, computers will run video clips and animation loops. see media advisory

MATC Culinary and Hospitality Students Host "An Evening of Good Taste" Event April 28

Madison "foodies" are in for a real treat Saturday, April 28. Potato Wrapped Tenderloin of Pork, Peppered Smoked Salmon, Lobster and Mango Cocktail and Poached Buffalo with Dried Cherries are among the 50 dishes to be prepared and served by MATC culinary students at the third annual "An Evening of Good Taste" event at the college's Truax location. Already sold out, even with the number of available tickets expanded from 400 last year to 500 this year, the event showcases the work of students in the Culinary Arts and Pastry programs. A fundraiser for the programs, the event also serves as a final exam for culinary students and for students in the Meeting and Event Management Program who help organize the event. see media advisory

"DO YOU SUDOKU?"
MATC Math Club invites all to a Sudodu Festival and High School Competition April 26 and 27
Sudoku, the logic puzzle craze that has swept the nation in recent years, is the cause for fun and celebration at the MATC Math Club's upcoming Sudoku Festival. Lectures will explore the mathematics behind the popular puzzle and give insight into its history and attraction. On the second day of the event, area high school students will compete in a "Who Wants to be a Sudoku Master" competition with a $1,000 top prize. The festival is free and open to all math and puzzle enthusiasts! see media advisory

300 LATINO STUDENTS TO ATTEND LATINO YOUTH CAREER AWARENESS/COLLEGE FAIR FRIDAY; Event expanded and organized by area educators in response to report on Latino Life in Dane County
According to a 2004 report from the National Center for Education Statistics, the dropout rate for Latino youth in the U.S. is 8.9 percent compared to 3.7 percent for white students and 5.7 percent for African American students. In the Madison area, the dropout rate for Latinos is even higher — 15 percent, according to the Cuéntame: Latino Life in Dane County, a report released by United Way of Dane County last June. In response to one of the recommendations of the report—to increase opportunities for Latino youth to learn more about careers and secondary education opportunities—have joined together to present an expanded a Latino Youth Career Awareness/College Fair. see media advisory

MATC IT SECURITY STUDENTS TEAM PLACES FIRST
IN AREA AND THIRD IN REGIONAL COLLEGIATE CYBER DEFENSE COMPETITIONS
A team of Information Technology (IT) students from Madison Area Technical College (MATC) won first place in the first round of the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. The team beat four other teams, all from Minnesota, and moved onto the Midwest regional competition in Illinois in mid-March taking third place. see press release

MATC INVITES PUBLIC TO TOUR COLLEGE DURING APRIL 10 COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT
More than 100 programs and services featured during fun, Hollywood-themed event
On Tuesday evening, April 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., Madison Area Technical College’s main Truax location, 3550 Anderson Street, will cast a Hollywood-style glow against the night sky as prospective students, their parents, families and the general public all are offered a backstage pass to experience the college’s programs of study and services.  Visitor will be able to explore 144 “degrees of success,” thrill to career and college transfer options, learn about smaller class sizes, flexible scheduling and financial aid, meet with faculty and staff stars and talk with graduates. see press release
