CHEFS OF TOMORROW TO SERVE 500 AT FINAL EXAM
MATC Culinary and Hospitality Students Host "An Evening of Good Taste" Event April 28
Madison "foodies" are in for a real treat Saturday, April 28. Potato Wrapped Tenderloin of Pork, Peppered Smoked Salmon, Lobster and Mango Cocktail and Poached Buffalo with Dried Cherries are among the 50 dishes to be prepared and served by MATC culinary students at the third annual "An Evening of Good Taste" event at the college's Truax location. Already sold out, even with the number of available tickets expanded from 400 last year to 500 this year, the event showcases the work of students in the Culinary Arts and Pastry programs. A fundraiser for the programs, the event also serves as a final exam for culinary students and for students in the Meeting and Event Management Program who help organize the event.
"The contributions and performance of our students counts as an important part of their final exam grading," says Lorin Toepper, the MATC associate dean who oversees these programs. "This has become a very popular event with food enthusiasts in the community and it grows each year. At the same time, we raise needed funds to support our culinary and hospitality programs, and provide students with a great opportunity to use their skills in a real-world large-scale event."
This yeaR, student chefs explore food selections with the theme East Coast meets West Coast. In addition to the array of appetizers, main and side dish samples, participants will be treated to a variety of pastries and desserts, as well as wine and beer supplied by area businesses including the new microbrewery, Ale Asylum. Diners also will have the opportunity to meet and talk with MATC alum Justin Carlisle, chef at Madison's Harvest restaurant who recently prepared and hosted a fundraising dinner at New York's prestigious James Beard House, and other successful MATC culinary and baking alumni.
