MATC’S THE CLARION STUDENT NEWSPAPER WINS SEVEN NATIONAL AWARDS

The Clarion, Madison Area Technical College’s student newspaper, and its staff received seven awards at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Convention held in Kansas City in late Fall.
The Clarion was awarded the Online Pacemaker Finalist Award for its website. The site was redesigned by Thomas Washbush (of Madison), design director who also received two awards for design: second place in newspaper sports page design and fifth place in advertisement design. His work is featured in the 14th edition of The Best of Collegiate Design, a publication of College Media Advisors, Inc., a national organization devoted to supporting student college media.

For the third consecutive year, The Clarion was selected as a Pacemaker Finalist. The Pacemaker is an award presented to student publications that are seen as being leaders in collegiate media. Judges select Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.
Opinion editor Melissa Stelter (of Middleton) received an Honorable Mention for an editorial on First Amendment rights.

The newspaper also received a second-place Best of Show award for two-year colleges for a September issue and an honorable mention for its Halloween issue.

The Clarion will learn next month about 2007 state awards. Last year, the newspaper earned 10 awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA).

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges.
