MATC District Board Member Honored by Illinois State University College of Education

Dr. Jon R. Bales, superintendent for the Deforest Area School District and member of the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board, will be inducted into the Illinois State University’s College of Education Hall of Fame on October 14.

The honor is awarded to alumni of the College of Education who have made significant contributions to the field. Dr. Bales’ is being honored for his work as an advocate on issues of effectiveness of educational systems and for his support and implementation of programs for both traditional and nontraditional students of all ages. A community leader, he was instrumental in the successful passage of the Deforest Area School District’s recent referendum — a direct result of his active support for an open dialog between the district’s board, administration and key stakeholders in the community.

Dr. Bales has served as president of both regional and statewide education and community boards and recently was appointed president of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators. As a member of the MATC District Board, he works closely with the Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin to ensure students are prepared for a successful future and serves as an advocate and liaison between K-12 and the state’s technical colleges.

An administrator in the Davenport Community School District for 21 years before moving to Wisconsin, Dr. Bales became superintendent of the Deforest Area School District in 1998. He received a bachelor’s degree in education and psychology, master’s degrees in school and clinical psychology, and in educational administration, and an Ed. S. degree in educational administration from Western Illinois University. He earned a Ph. D. in educational leadership and policy from Illinois State University in 1997 and was a Fulbright Exchange Scholar in 2001. Selected as Deforest Area Citizen of the Year in 2004, he has served on several area boards including the Deforest Area Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin and both the Dane County and Deforest Area library boards.

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It provides “real world smart” education through a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and numerous community locations throughout the district.
