Green Partnership with WECC to Create Furniture From Rubble

WHAT:

Today students in MATC's Cabinetmaking and Millwork Program will use a new outdoor sawmill to create lumber from tornado-damaged trees.

The lumber will be used to build furniture for the the new office of the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp. (WECC). The trees were damaged during last year's tornado and removed from University Research Park, the site for WECC's new office.

WEEC purchased a sawmill for MATC in exchange for the furniture the students will build from the trees.

WHO:
  • MATC Cabinetmaking and Millwork students using an outdoor sawmill.
  • Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp, a non-profit entity that administers the Focus on Energy conservation initiatives for the state.
WHERE:

MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson Street, Madison, WI -- outside of J wing, door #63 (drive in back of main building to side nearest Stoughton Rd and animal barn)

WHEN:

Thursday, August 3, 2006
8 am - Noon

WHY:
WECC's new building will receive LEED Certification points (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for using timber from the damaged trees on the site.

The MATC students will gain experience working and learning from a real world project.

Their efforts will result in years of service from the furniture to be built from wood resources that did not need to be harvested.
