"Back to School” at MATC Starts Next Week with
More Accelerated Offerings, Additional Classes to Reduce Wait Lists,
New Bilingual Programs and Expanded ESL Instruction
Next week thousands of Madison Area Technical College
(MATC) students officially will end their summers as the new school year
begins and they head toward the college’s five campuses, located
in Madison, Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg, and Watertown, to start
fall classes on August 28. MATC begins the 2006-07 academic year with
14 new programs of study, many designed in certificate, accelerated and
bilingual formats, and ranging in subject from the biosciences to business
and office skills to automotive painting and machining. see

Administrative Changes at Regional Campuses
Part of Overall College Reorganization
Madison Area Technical College is adopting a new and broader regional
strategy for economic and workforce development that is designed to expand
services and develop relationships across its 12-county district. The
new strategy has prompted the development of a new administrative structure
at the college’s four regional
campuses, located in Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Portage and Reedsburg,

MADISON AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS
AT “NEW STUDENT DAZE” EVENTS
Madison Area Technical College
will welcome new students at “New
Student Daze” events scheduled at two of the college’s Madison
locations and each of the college’s regional campuses. The event
offers “one-stop shopping” to prepare for the new school
year. At the event, new students can obtain “One Card” student
identification cards, lockers, email and computer access accounts, parking
passes, bus passes and buy books. Students can visit stations in the
main lobby of each location for information on a variety of college services
including advising, counseling, and financial aid; clubs, community involvement
and athletics; day care; tutoring; career services and campus jobs. A
series of College Success Workshops will provide information on instructor
expectations, meeting new people and first day do’s and don’ts. see

MATC, UW-MADISON COLLABORATE ON BIODIESEL
FUEL REACTOR
MADISON -- Madison Area Technical College today dedicated
its new biodiesel reactor, built in partnership with the University of
Wisconsin-Madison to produce motor fuel blended from waste vegetable
oil and methanol. The reactor will be used to educate MATC students in
the production, use and quality control of biodiesel fuels and the maintenance
of biodiesel-fueled engines and vehicles. see

This fall Madison Area Technical College will be one of the
first colleges in the world to offer a class in the new technology, Ruby
on Rails, an open source framework that is hot with employers because it
makes developing web applications significantly faster and more efficient. see press

MATC Students Saw Timber to Repurpose Tornado-Damaged Trees;
Green Partnership with WEEC to Create Furniture From Rubble
Today students in MATC's Cabinetmaking and Millwork Program
will use a new outdoor sawmill to create lumber from tornado-damaged
trees. The lumber will be used to build furniture for the the new office
of the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corp. (WEEC). The trees were damaged
during last year's tornado and removed from University Research Park,
the site for WEEC's new office. WEEC purchased a sawmill for MATC in
exchange for the furniture the students will build from the trees. see

Biodiesel Reactor to be Dedicated, Demonstrated at MATC
Dedication and demonstration of joint MATC-UW Biodiesel Fuel
Reactor project. Highlights include: demonstration of the reactor designed
and built as a joint project between UW-Madison and MATC students to
convert vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel; demonstration of diesel engine
running on biodiesel; and banner-breaking by semi truck fueled with biodiesel. see
