MATC District Board Approves 2006-07 Budget

The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board voted at its June 14 meeting to adopt the 2006-07 fiscal year budget. The budget of $177,617,000 includes an estimated mill rate of 1.21945. For every $100,000 in assessed property value, district property owners will pay $121.95 in taxes to support MATC, $4.72 less than last year when property owners paid $126.67 for every $100,000 in assessed value. The estimated mill rate will be adjusted in October based on actual equalized property valuation assessments.

“This budget strengthens MATC’s vital role in local economic development, reaches out more consistently to ethnic minority populations and builds better relationships with partners in the K-12 school districts and the University of Wisconsin System,” states Mary Rapp, MATC director of finance. According to Rapp, the budget includes major new investments to increase student access and shorten program waiting lists. The major initiatives include:

  • Staffing to complete the planned three-year expansion of nursing instruction.
  • Adding sections and summer advising for mandatory assessment, advising and placement classes.
  • Creating a “First Semester Experience” program to increase students’ success during the crucial period that starts, and often determines, their success in college.
  • Expanding summer school course offerings.
  • Adding sections in programs that currently have waiting lists, including arts & sciences, nursing assistant, college transfer art, welding, construction and criminal justice.
  • New and expanded course offerings in construction and remodeling, “Fastrack” marketing and English as a Second Language.

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and numerous community locations throughout the district.
