MATC’S SCOTT BEARD HONORED AS WISCONSIN’S
OUTSTANDING INDIAN EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Wisconsin Indian Education Association Also Chooses MATC’s
Jennifer White Eagle as Outstanding Vocational/Technical Student
Scott
Beard, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Madison Area Technical
College, has been named “Outstanding Indian Educator of the Year” by
the Wisconsin Indian Education Association (WIEA). In addition, WIEA has chosen
MATC student Jennifer White Eagle as its Outstanding Vocational/Technical Student
of the Year.
Beard, a Portage resident, was administrator of the MATC
Portage Campus from 2000-2005. In his current position as institutional
effectiveness
director, he
leads the college’s efforts to improve systems that assess how well students
are learning and how instructional programs can be improved. Beard also serves
as a member of MATC’s Inter-Cultural Council, where he helps monitor initiatives
to make staff more aware of diversity issues and ensure the academic success
of special student populations.
Beard holds bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in English from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and is pursuing
a Ph.D. in Leadership in Higher Education.
He has worked as recruiter/coordinator of a native nursing project at UW-Eau
Claire with Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College in Hayward, and was
executive director of education for the Ho-Chunk Nation in Black River Falls.
Jennifer
White Eagle of DeForest, WIEA’s Outstanding Vocational/Technical
Student of the Year, has served for two semesters as president of MATC’s
Native American Student Association. A student in the Supervisory Management
Program, she has coordinated weekend study sessions, as well as numerous fund
raising and educational efforts, and is developing Native American awareness
activities for the benefit of MATC students and staff. White Eagle is a member
of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society that recognizes academic excellence in
two-year college students. She has been a work-study employee in the MATC Multicultural
Services Department. WIEA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving
educational opportunities for Native Americans in Wisconsin. It awards
scholarships, hosts
conferences
for educators, and advocates for funding of financial aid for American Indian
students at the postsecondary level and improving the implementation state
requirements for public schools to teach about the native people of Wisconsin.
MATC
is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s
16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts
and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational
diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs
of study. The college serves parts of 12 counties located in southcentral
Wisconsin
and offers instruction through five campuses and numerous community locations
throughout the district.
