High School “Super Mathematician” Competition, Math Musical and MATC Student
“PIe” Eating Contest Featured in Mathematics Awareness Month Celebration

WHAT:

To recognize Mathematics Awareness Month this April, the faculty of Madison Area Technical College’s (MATC) Mathematics Department is hosting a morning filled with knowledge, competition, music and food – all designed to interest local high school and MATC students in the fun, challenge and importance of mathematics.

WHO:

125 high school and MATC students, MATC mathematics faculty and other staff will participate, including competitors from 10 area high schools who have qualified for the final round of “Who Wants to Be a Super Mathematician?”. The finalists are from the following high schools:

Arrowhead, Edgewood, Madison East, Madison Memorial, Madison West, Malcolm Shabazz, Marquette University, Reedsburg, Rufus King and Waunakee.

WHEN:

Friday, April 7, 8:30 am to 1 pm

8:30 am • Welcome – Dr. Bettsey Barhorst, MATC President, Mitby Theater

8:35 am • “Invariant-Based Face Recognition” Professor Nigel Boston, UW—Madison, graduate of Cambridge and Harvard Universities, will discuss how computers automatically recognize faces and how this technology is important in homeland and other security efforts.

9:30 am • “Who Wants to Be a Super Mathematician Competition” – 10 high school students compete in the finals by answering pre-calculus questions. Top prize is $1,000! Mitby Theater

11 am • “Math Morsels and Mayhem,” a musical celebrating five famous mathematicians and their discoveries, performed by Marquette University High School students. Mitby Theater

Noon • PIe Eating Contest – high school students will cheer MATC students as they devour pies baked by MATC’s Baking and Pastry Arts Program students – all in honor of the symbol for the mathematical constant “PI,” or 3.14, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Cafeteria (129D)

12:15 pm • Lunch and MATC Jazz Ensemble – Cafeteria (129B&C)

For nearby access to the Mitby Theater, please park in the gated Visitor Lot located in the main parking lot on Wright Street.
