Apprenticeship Career Event Honors Marine’s Memory
Career Snapshot April 26 at MATC Promotes Building Construction

Shane O’Donnell of DeForest always wished that more high school students knew what he knew about apprenticeships. A graduate of Madison Area Technical College’s Plumbing Apprenticeship program, O’Donnell was thriving in his job at Hooper Corporation when his Marine Reserve unit was mobilized to Iraq.

Tragically, O’Donnell never returned to the job he loved; he died in combat in 2004. But his wish to spread the word about apprenticeships is being fulfilled through a fund his family established with the MATC Foundation to promote this unique earn-while-you-learn career path to high schools students.

On Wednesday, April 26, building construction apprenticeships will be featured at a Career Snapshot event at MATC’s Commercial Avenue Education Center in Madison, with support from the Shane O’Donnell Memorial Fund. It is one of a series of activities MATC is planning to boost the apprenticeship program and attract more young people to promising careers in high-skill, high-wage fields.

WHAT:

Construction Apprenticeship Career Snapshot. Career Snapshots is a series of evening seminars presented by MATC that allows attendees to participate in an interactive program focusing on particular career fields. Attendees will learn more about individual occupations and may participate in hands-on demonstrations such as conduit bending, mortaring brick walls, wood finishing, and other construction techniques involving a variety of tools. Some participants will also join actual Carpentry and Plumbing Apprenticeship classes in progress.

WHO:

MATC Apprenticeship instructors in Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Bricklaying, Ironworking, Painting & Decorating, Steamfitting and Sheet Metal; current students in MATC Apprenticeship programs; building contractor and labor union representatives; prospective students and their parents exploring career options.

WHERE:
MATC Commercial Avenue Education Center
2125 Commercial Ave., Madison (across from Kraft/Oscar Mayer)
WHEN:

Wednesday, April 26, 2006
6:00-8:00 p.m.

WHY:

To interest more prospective students in construction apprenticeships – a unique earn-while-you-learn system where paid on-the-job training is combined with classroom instruction to provide the education needed to achieve success in a high-skill, high-wage construction career. Whether changing careers or simply exploring different career options, community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
