Apprenticeship Career Event Honors Marine’s
Memory
Career Snapshot April 26 at MATC Promotes Building Construction
Shane
O’Donnell of DeForest always wished that more high
school students knew what he knew about apprenticeships. A graduate
of Madison Area Technical College’s Plumbing Apprenticeship
program, O’Donnell was thriving in his job at Hooper Corporation
when his Marine Reserve unit was mobilized to Iraq.
Tragically,
O’Donnell never returned to the job he loved;
he died in combat in 2004. But his wish to spread the word about
apprenticeships is being fulfilled through a fund his family established
with the MATC Foundation to promote this unique earn-while-you-learn
career path to high schools students.
On Wednesday, April 26, building
construction apprenticeships will be featured at a Career Snapshot
event at MATC’s Commercial
Avenue Education Center in Madison, with support from the Shane
O’Donnell Memorial Fund. It is one of a series of activities
MATC is planning to boost the apprenticeship program and attract
more young people to promising careers in high-skill, high-wage
fields.
