MATC’S The Clarion Student Newspaper
Wins 10 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Awards

The Clarion, Madison Area Technical College’s (MATC) student newspaper, and its staff received 10 awards at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) Convention held earlier this month in Stevens Point.

In addition to the 10 awards, Editor Heidi Freymiller (of Marshall) was one of only two individuals to receive a WNA Foundation Scholarship. She is the first MATC student to receive the $1,500 scholarship.

Managing editor Meagan Parrish (of Madison) received four awards: first place and a certificate of merit for general reporting, second place in feature writing and a certificate of merit in editorial writing.

Design director Thomas Washbush (of Madison) received a first-place award in graphics, while artist Christy Stetson (of Verona) received a third-place award in the same category.

Opinions editor Kate Gillman (of Columbus) received a third-place award for an advertisement she designed while working as a graphic artist last year.

Writer Sarah Schoville-Kyrie (of the Minocqua area) received a second-place award in general reporting, while former managing editor Bryan Morris (of Madison) received a third-place award in general reporting.

In addition, The Clarion garnered third place in the general excellence category. The newspaper is available on newspaper racks at all MATC campuses and online at http://www.matc-clarion.com.

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC offers associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and non-degree courses in more than 140 programs of study. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in southcentral Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and numerous community locations throughout the district.
