MATC PERFORMING ARTS
HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR CHESS
Madison Area Technical College Performing Arts is holding auditions
for its spring production of the powerful musical about Cold War
intrigue, Chess. Open auditions for actors/singers/dancers will
be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 12, and Tuesday, December
13, in the Studio Theater, room 206, MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson
Street. Roles available include a cast of principle characters
consisting of seven men (adult to old age) and two women (adult).
One child role is available for Young Florence. The ensemble of
10-12 people will play numerous roles.
Chess features the lyrics
of Tom Rice (Aida, Phantom of the Opera) and the music of Benny
Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the male members
of the musical group ABBA). Set against the back drop of a cold-war
era World Chess Championship, this powerful musical tackles the
questions of truth, honor and loyalty.
The MATC production will
be directed by Wm. Patrick Barlow. The conductor will be Jeff
Peronto; vocal director will be Joshua
Dupont and choreographer will be Robin Fonfara. Production
stage manager
will be Christopher Lechner. To prepare for the audition: Read the
play. One copy is available at the MATC Truax Library on closed
reserve, and some copies are
available for check out through the MATC Box Office.
Auditioners
should prepare a brief (one minute) monologue or prose piece; perform
a short musical selection (16-24 measures) that
showcases his or her vocal range. Please bring an extra copy of
the music for the pianist in the key you will be performing. Bring
your personal schedule to the auditions to check against the rehearsal
and performance schedule – availability will play a role
in casting. You also will be taught a short dance routine for the
audition. Auditions are open to all MATC students, staff and community
members.
Call back auditions will be by invitation only on Thursday,
December 15. To prepare for the call back audition, read the
play and become
familiar with all roles. Be willing to read a variety of characters
with multiple partners.
Dates and times for rehearsals are tentatively scheduled for
Monday through Thursday in the choreography/singing/blocking
phases. Definite Friday rehearsals and possible
Saturday afternoon rehearsals will be scheduled as the production nears the
run dates. Performances will include Friday and Saturday
evenings plus a Sunday matinee
beginning March 3 through March 12, 2006.
