MATC Performing Arts
Holds Auditions for The Crucible
Madison Area Technical College Performing Arts is holding auditions
for its first production of the 2005-2006 season, the Tony Award-winning
play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Open auditions will be held
at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, and Wednesday, September 13,
in the Studio Theater, room 206, MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson Street.
Roles are available for 20 individuals including 10 men (adult
to old age) and 10 women (adult to old age, one African American)
to play the citizens of Salem and the traveling court.
The Crucible is set in Salem, Massachusetts,
amid the chaos of the infamous witch trials. Written as a direct
reaction to the
equally infamous McCarthy Red Scare of the 1950s, the play reveals
a cautionary tale for all times. As this modern classic unfolds,
a timeless parable about lust for power, the power of fear and
the abuses of unchecked authority become evident.
The MATC production will be directed by Michael Lussenden, MATC
communication arts instructor.
To prepare for the audition: Read
the play. One copy is available at the MATC Truax Library on
closed reserve, and some copies are
available for check out through the MATC Box Office beginning
August 15. Auditioners should prepare a brief (one minute) monologue
or
prose piece. Bring your personal schedule to the auditions to
check against the rehearsal and performance schedule -- availability
will play a role in casting. Auditions are open to all MATC students,
staff and community members.
Call back auditions will be by invitation
only on Wednesday, September 14, in the Studio Theater at 7 p.m.
To prepare for the call back
audition, read the play and become familiar with all roles. Be
willing to read a variety of characters with multiple partners.
Dates and times for rehearsals are scheduled for Thursday, Sept.
15 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. (for measurements) and Mondays through
Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m.
starting September 19. Friday and Saturday afternoon rehearsals will be added
to the schedule starting October 21. Performances will be Thursday, Friday
and Saturday evenings from November 3 through November 12.
More detailed information on the production or the audition
process is available by contacting Michael Lussenden at (608)
246-6479.
