MATC Wins $450,000 NSF Grant to Provide
Post-Baccalaureate Biotechnology Skills Certificate
Madison Area
Technical College (MATC) has received a grant for $450,000 from the National
Science Foundation (NSF) to help support
the development of a new biotechnology certificate for individuals who
already have earned a bachelor of science degree in biology or a related
field. The certificate will focus on providing students the practical,
state-of-the-art skills necessary to begin careers in the biotechnology
industry. The college plans to begin enrolling students in the semester-long
certificate program in spring 2006. see press release

MATC District Board Approves 2005-06 Budget
The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District Board
voted at its June 8 meeting to adopt the 2005-06 fiscal year budget.
The budget of $169,458,500 includes an estimated mill rate of 1.30446.
For every $100,000 in assessed property value, district property owners
will pay $130.45 in taxes to support MATC, $0.79 less than last year
when property owners paid $131.24 for every $100,000 in assessed value.
The estimated mill rate will be adjusted in October based on actual
equalized property valuation assessments. see

MATC Honors More Than 100 at
High School Equivalency Completion Ceremony
Madison Area Technical
College will hold its 13th Annual High School Completion Recognition
Ceremony on Thursday, June 9, at 7
p.m. in the Mitby Theater at MATC–Truax, 3550 Anderson Street.
The cap and gown ceremony honors students who have completed requirements
for a high school option, including the High School Equivalency Diploma
(HSED), the General Educational Development (GED) certificate, the External
Diploma Program (EDP) and the High School Equivalency Program (HEP).
A reception in the cafeteria will follow the ceremony. see

MATC Names First Class of Community Scholars
Nineteen High School Seniors Win Grants to Study and Serve
Nineteen seniors from 14 high schools throughout Dane County have
been selected as recipients of Madison Area Technical College’s first
Community Scholarships.
Funded by a gift from John H. “Jack” Lussier,
Chairman of the Board of The Capital Times Co., the Community Scholarships
will make an MATC education affordable while also developing service-learning
experiences for the recipients. Community Scholars agree to complete
a minimum 80 hours of volunteer service each semester. Each recipient
will receive $2,000 the first year and the scholarship may be renewed
at $2,500 for a second year depending on academic progress and volunteer
service hours. see

Twelve Students Win MATC Technical Excellence Scholarships
Twelve high school seniors have been selected to receive
2005 Technical Excellence Scholarships to attend Madison Area Technical
College this fall. The Technical Excellence Scholarship is a scholarship
for entering first year students at MATC who have completed a high school
diploma, GED, or HSED in good academic standing. It encourages students
to study MATC programs that offer solid earning potential and excellent
job placement. see
