MATC Global Horizons Hosts "Struggle for
Justice" Photo Display
As part of its Global Horizons Lecture Series on
Immigration and Migration, Madison Area Technical College is hosting “Struggle for Justice,” a photo
display incorporating historical and contemporary photographs of people struggling
for peace and justice in the world. The photographs will be on display through
June 30 in MATC’s Truax Library, 3550 Anderson St., Madison, on the second
floor.
The display features “Lucha: The Migrant Farmworkers’ Struggle for
Justice in Wisconsin,” an historical photo collection documenting the farmworkers’ labor
movement in Wisconsin in the 1960s, and “¡En Solidaridad! Global
Struggles for Peace and Justice,” photos of people struggling to create
a new future after the ravages of war and conflict in areas such as postwar El
Salavador, Croatia, Northern Ireland and post-apartheid South Africa.
The “Lucha” migrant farmworker photographs are by area artist and
activist David Giffey and co-organized by Chicano Studies scholar and political
leader Jesus Salas. With extensive bilingual text and historical materials accompanying
the photos, the exhibit brings to life the organizing, strikes and successes
of one of Wisconsin’s hidden populations.
“¡En Solidaridad!” includes photographs
from Latin America, South Africa and Europe by
Geoff Bradshaw, MATC international programs coordinator. “While some
of the struggles pictured are obvious and overt, such as people’s movements
in El Salvador struggling against globalization and economic imperialism, many
struggles for peace and justice are represented here by more private and internal
struggles,” Bradshaw explains. “Those struggles are seen in the
faces of children and adults who, in the face of abject poverty, manage to
preserve
their presence, dignity and even sense of humor. ‘¡En Solidaridad!’ is
meant to complement the ‘Lucha’ exhibit by illustrating the struggles
for peace and justice globally in which all those in the struggle stand together
in solidarity.” The display is made possible by the MATC Global Horizons
Series, an initiative in global education for the MATC campus and
community. The Global Horizons Series
hosts lectures and events that promote continuous learning with regard to diversity,
interdependence and global citizenship. Programs also are co-sponsored by the
MATC Student Life Educational Programming Board, a student organization that
strives to raise awareness of global, cultural, environmental and social issues
facing students and communities today.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin
Technical College System's 16 colleges and serves about 50,000
individuals each year. It provides a comprehensive
curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education
and life enrichment
studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC provides
training in more than 100 career programs. The college serves all or parts
of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various other locations throughout the
