MATC Industrial Controls Final Exam: “A Fight to the Death”
Students Demonstrate Industrial Robot Skills in Battlebot Competition This Friday

For one class at MATC, the final exam will be a fight to the death … literally … until one battlebot dies or both robot batteries go dead. The winning team will receive an “A” for the final project. The loser – well, it will be up to the spectators to give them a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.”

WHAT:

A robotic gladiator battle to the death in the 120 Pound Middleweight Class. The public is invited to view this epic battle.

WHERE:
MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson Street, Madison
Bay 42 – Industrial Maintenance, Room 65
WHEN:

Friday, May 13, 2005, 11:00-11:30 AM

WHO:
MATC Industrial Maintenance Students (controlling the robots)
“Razor Raptor” Sleek, fast and deadly. Don’t get it angry!
“Stinger” A monster with menacing, air-driven fangs.
WHY:

Fourth semester MATC Industrial Maintenance students take Manufacturing Systems Application and Control to learn about manufacturing automation. The skills learned in the course are in great demand in industry. Just as nursing graduates are needed to keep an aging Wisconsin population healthy, skilled technicians are needed to keep Wisconsin manufacturing plants healthy.

The students learn control theory, practice and group project skills by designing and building automated systems, similar to those used in industry. Over the years, students have built automated can crushers, ping-pong ball sorters, automated soda can openers and other projects that have been fun to design and build and related to industrial automation.

This year, the instructor and students decided to build battlebots. The class of 15 students was split into two competing teams with each team given the same basic motors, controls and batteries. Each team separately decided the design, armor and weapons complement. Most of the other parts were scrounged from old equipment.

Note: Please call ahead if you’d like to arrange for parking in Truax’s Center Court near the event venue.
