Generation Mix National Awareness Tour to Stop at
MATC Downtown as Only Stop in Wisconsin

The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Downtown Education Center will be the only Wisconsin site to host Generation Mix tour activities during the historic 5-week, 8,000-mile journey of five multiracial young adults to raise awareness of America’s mixed race baby boom. All events take place at MATC’s Downtown Education Center, 211 N. Carroll St. in the 1st floor atrium on Wednesday, May 4, from 3-7 p.m.

The five young adults are traveling the United States in a 26-foot RV, stopping in 16 cities to promote a national dialogue about the multiracial experience. At each stop, local communities learn about the multiracial experience through family friendly activities, interactive games, reading materials, comprehensive resource lists and facilitated dialogues. In addition to the activity fairs, audiences will enjoy a keynote stage presentation by the five tour crew members who will combine personal anecdotes with compelling information about the mixed race experience. The public can also participate via a comprehensive tour website available at www.generationmix.org, where the five young adults keep a diary of the tour stops and additional press releases and events are listed.

“We’re very excited to host something as important as the National Awareness Tour,” says Harold Gates who is a faculty advisor of the MATC Social Change Collective and a member of the Midwest Center for Cultural Competence, the two local organizations who are sponsoring the event. “Madison is a diverse city that must continue to promote dialogue and awareness about multiracial issues.”

The public is welcome to attend and celebrate the racial diversity in Madison. The keynote presentation is titled “Growing up Mixed in our Highly Race Conscious Society.”

The Generation MIX National Awareness Tour is a project of MAVIN Foundation, the nation’s leading organization that celebrates and advocates for mixed race people and families. Since 1998, MAVIN’s award-winning projects like MAVIN magazine and the MatchMaker Bone Marrow Project have raised awareness of this rapidly growing population.
