American Family Insurance is Honored for Support of MATC and Technical Education

American Family Insurance was honored today for its substantial, longtime support of Madison Area Technical College and technical education in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Association for Career and Technical Education (WACTE) presented its C. L. Greiber Award of Merit to American Family at its annual conference in Appleton.

“American Family’s partnership with MATC is a model for business involvement in career and technical education. This company’s generous contributions of time, talent and financial aid have provided a tremendous boost to student success at MATC,” said Linda Bahr, a member of the WACTE Madison Chapter Awards Committee, which nominated American Family.

The C. L. Greiber Award of Merit recognizes individuals, companies, or organizations for outstanding contributions to the improvement, promotion and development of career, technical and adult education in Wisconsin, as evidenced through activities such as sponsored programs, personal services, supportive publications, financial support or meritorious activities.

The award notes American Family’s tradition of community involvement, which extends beyond financial contributions. Company employees and agents give their time, donating countless hours to help charities and community projects to succeed. American Family’s support of MATC has included:

  • Contributing $5,200 each year to the Madison Area Technical College Foundation for scholarship donations for 8 full-time students;
  • Participating in the Employer Forum and job fairs at MATC, providing company tours for students to explore career options, and offering a paid full-time summer internship program for approximately 20 students from MATC and other colleges;
  • Donating network routers for a CIS Network Specialist Lab established at MATC;
  • Supporting professional development of faculty by allowing MATC CIS instructors to participate in their corporate training programs; and
  • Regularly hiring Madison Area Technical College graduates.

In addition, American Family representatives have served on a number of MATC advisory committees, including all five of the Computer Information Services/Information Technology (CIS/IT) program committees. The company also participated in developing curriculum for MATC’s Business Division for web programming, network specialist, programmer/analyst and client-server computing courses.

Based in Madison since 1927, American Family offers a wide range of insurance and financial services products in 17 states, including Wisconsin. The company ranks 313th on the Fortune 500 list and is the nation’s 3rd largest mutual property/casualty insurance company. American Family is the largest private employer in Dane County.

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
