MATC Receives Major Gift to Launch Community Scholars Initiative

Madison Area Technical College Foundation has received a gift of $500,000 from John H. “Jack” Lussier to create the MATC Community Scholars Initiative and expand the Lussier Family Scholarships, established in 1988.

“We are grateful that Mr. Lussier continues to support MATC students through his family scholarship endowment, while creating this exciting new opportunity for students from Dane County schools. The Community Scholars program is designed to attract new students to MATC, while impressing upon our students the value of volunteer service to the community,” said Bob Dinndorf, MATC Foundation executive director. “MATC has been a leader among Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges in developing service learning, and our Student Life staff will coordinate this aspect of the Community Scholars program,” he said.

High school counselors at schools in Dane County will be briefed on the program in January, with application forms available in February. Initial awards will be announced during spring awards convocations at the scholars’ respective high schools. A minimum of 10 scholarships will be available the first year of the program. Awards will be $2,000 for each Community Scholar’s first year at MATC and $3,000 for their second year.

“The financial aid they receive from the Community Scholars Initiative will make it easier for these students to make time in their schedules to have an impact as volunteers. It will be great to see some of Dane County’s next generation of community volunteer leaders coming from among these Community Scholars,” Dinndorf said. “Ninety-seven percent of MATC alumni remain in Wisconsin after graduation, and the vast majority live and work in our area.”

The MATC Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1973 to develop financial support for students and programs of Madison Area Technical College. The MATC Foundation has provided access to learning through nearly $8 million of financial assistance to more than 25,000 students.

MATC is the second largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems’ 16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
